In a busy world it is easy to forget the power of small gestures. But sometimes the littlest things, like a smile, a kind word, or a helping hand, can have the biggest impact. A month of kindness is all about celebrating these everyday acts that bring light into the lives of others and make our campus feel more supportive and connected.
Kindness isn’t just a nice idea it has real benefits, especially during busy uni weeks or stressful assessment periods. Small acts of kindness can boost someone’s mood, reduce feelings of anxiety, and help create a community where everyone feels included and supported.
Sometimes the simplest actions matter most. A friendly “hello” when you see someone in the library queue, in the SU cafe, or in halls can make someone’s day. Challenge yourself to greet at least one new person this week — even a smile counts!
Sending a quick text to check in on a friend before a big deadline, or after a tough lecture, can mean more than you know. Micro challenge: send one encouraging message to a classmate, housemate, or peer each day for a week.
Little things count. Offering to share your lecture notes, helping a peer carry heavy bags across campus, or lending a book from the library can make a practical difference. Campus challenge: spot one opportunity to help someone this week, even if it is just holding a door or giving directions.
Social media is part of student life — but it doesn’t have to be all stress and deadlines. Share an encouraging post about student achievements, tag a friend in something positive, or post about something you appreciate on campus. Challenge: share one uplifting post this week to your story or timeline.
Kindness isn’t only about others — it’s also about looking after yourself. When you feel overwhelmed by uni work, take a pause. Have a short walk outside, enjoy a coffee in the SU plaza, or listen to your favourite playlist. Self-kindness challenge: schedule one 30-minute break in your week just for you.
Kindness can be everyday habits: holding the door for someone with their arms full, offering to swap a queue spot, or smiling at someone struggling with directions on campus. Micro challenge: do one small gesture every day for a week and notice how it feels.
You don’t have to wait for a special event to be kind. Try one small act of kindness each day — it might be complimenting a classmate, helping a student find a room, or sharing a snack. Over time these moments create a culture where kindness is part of everyday life. Challenge yourself to try three different acts this week.
This month, try one small act of kindness every day. Notice how it makes you feel and watch how the effects spread to others. Kindness does not have to be grand or complicated — often it’s the smallest things that matter the most.
