Official SU Response:
After discussion within the Big Ideas group, we will not be taking this idea forward. This decision is mainly due to the ongoing shortage of available placement locations across the NHS. Both the University and the Placement Team are working hard within these limitations to support all students as best they can.
If any students are experiencing challenges related to their placement, they are encouraged to contact the Placement Team directly so that appropriate support can be provided.
Thank you for raising this important issue, and please do continue to share your thoughts through the Big Ideas platform.
Being an international nursing student comes with its own set of challenges. Many of us juggle studies, long placement hours, and financial responsibilities — all without access to public funding. It’s not always easy travelling long distances to placements, especially when transport costs and time quickly add up.
This piece sheds light on why international students should have the right to choose placements based on proximity and personal circumstances. It’s not just about convenience — it’s about fairness, wellbeing, and helping students thrive in both their studies and clinical practice.
