Update from the SU:
Car parking has been a long‑standing concern raised by students over many years. Historically, we have had to decline similar proposals due to feasibility challenges — mainly limitations around space, cost, and University planning priorities.
However, there may be potential for change in the future. With new infrastructure projects currently being discussed and planned by the University, there is a possibility that additional student/staff parking could be considered as part of future developments. At this stage, nothing has been confirmed, and decisions are still subject to planning, budgeting, and long‑term feasibility assessments.
Because there is at least some emerging potential, we will list this Big Idea as “We are working on it.” This means that while we cannot promise an outcome, we recognise its importance and will continue to monitor the situation closely. We will provide updates as soon as any concrete information becomes available.
Thank you again for raising this issue — your idea helps us continue highlighting the challenges students face and ensures these concerns remain part of ongoing University conversations.
It has recently come to my attention that the available parking used by both students and staff of the university is either extremely limited in number, unreasonably priced, or results in a 10+ minute walk to and from the university.
What I would like to see implemented is either: An increase in parking spaces made available to both students and staff of the university - at a reasonable price - or, as I am aware that such a change is highly unlikely to take place due to many factors, such as cost and time; that student and staff are instead given more awareness of the spaces they currently have available to them, as well as the places to avoid. The reason for this, is that there have been a few instances of people making use of what they believed was legal on-the-road parking, only to later find out that they were actually in a permit-only area e.g. The Moldgreen, Lower Houses and Primrose Hill areas. As well as the occasional student and staff member having to spend an unreasonable amount of time searching for a viable place to park, but due to the limited selection, are forced to pay an unreasonable price for parking, or having to park 10+ minutes away from the university, resulting in them showing up late.
If anyone has experienced this problem firsthand, heard of this being a problem for others, or maybe even know a few places that others could make use of; please be sure to mention it in the comments, as this would be incredibly helpful in showcasing your support, and severity of this idea, as well as helping out others within the university. Thank you!
